A change in water quality
Water quality is obviously a very important concern in building a dam. When a dam is made is creates reservoirs which cities and towns use to power there city or supply it with a water source. Some Countries including ours don't have dams down to perfection and problems occur because of that. The build up of water in reservoirs sometimes causes rapid evaporation which is not good for the water cycle. Also when a reservoir gets big enough it traps nutrient-laden sediments being which release phosphorus; furthering algai growth in the river.
Too often in struggling countries to much time and money is spent on dams. In hopes of creating a water source they build the dam not spending enough effort on the water quality itself and the supply of it. The water build up also creates a fertile spot for mosquitoes and other disease carrying bugs to make a home in. Cases of malaria and other diseases have thus become more frequent. Not only in struggling countries do problems like this occur. In 1995 Las Vegas experienced an increase in cryptosporidiosis.
