Beaver Dam
Ever since I was a youngin, there was a lot of curiosity behind how a Beaver Dam works. Just like concrete dams, beaver dams play a big role in how a river works. According to http://animal.discovery.com/mammals/beaver-dam.htm beaver dams play a big role in making the land and ecosystem around the dam nice and fertile for other wild life to inhabit the area. Without the pesky creatures making dams you would see habitats not do as well and you would see animals flounder.
The way we made our own model of the beaver dam was gather a lot of twigs from some trees outside the school and built them up on our water table. The experiment worked a whole lot better than expected. The water built up on one side of the dam then after a few seconds flowed through a couple inches lower. The water flow rate was 1.24 gallons per minute meaning it slowed down the water flow rate compared to our control.
Not only does beaver dams in the real world slow down the flow it also makes the area around the dam luscious. Animals have adapted to when the beavers make the dams and certainly depend on there dam making ability. So if you ever see a beaver dam in your future appreciate what it does!
